Guyana. A severe drought hit Guyana during the first half
of the year and threatened the sugar cane harvest so
important to the country's economy. Guyana is the
Caribbean's largest producer of sugar for the US and
European markets. In January and February, only 93 mm of
rain fell to normal 250 mm. However, the state sugar company
Guysuco reported in July that the harvest could be partially
