POPULATION GROUPS IN CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICA
The multiethnic Central and South America is a result of colonial history in various phases. Until the late 15th century, there were only Native Americans living on the entire American continent. With the beginning of the conquest, Spanish and Portuguese colonists, as well as the descendants of indigenous peoples and conquistadors, were added. A little later, the first Africans reached the continent through the slave trade. In the 19th and 20th centuries there were strong waves of immigration from Europeans, but also to a very local immigration of Asians, especially from India.
The structures within the individual states are very different. Countries like Argentina or Uruguay have an almost homogeneous population with European roots, Haiti is almost exclusively inhabited by people whose ancestors had African roots. In almost all states, the population has mixed heavily over time. This becomes clear in Colombia and Chile, for example, where two thirds of the population do not belong to a specific population group. The proportions of indigenous populations are greatest in Bolivia (> 50%) as well as Peru, Mexico and Guatemala (around a third). The largest population groups with an Asian background are in Guyana, Suriname and the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
