Solomon Islands climate
The Solomon Islands are known for their warm and always humid climate. Due to the proximity to the equator, the temperatures in the island state hardly fluctuate and are around 24-29 ° C all year round. The thermometer shows the highest values in February. The lowest values are reached in July and August. Then they can sometimes even drop to 18 ° C during the night. As a rule, it is a little warmer on the larger islands on the coast than in the higher inland areas.
The water temperature of the Pacific is also tropically warm all year round and fluctuates between 23 (summer) and 28 ° C (winter).
The amount of precipitation in most of the country is 1,800-3,000 mm. The mountain slopes exposed to the wind get considerably more at 6,000 to 8,000 mm. This is particularly true of the islands of volcanic origin, as they usually have higher mountains on which the trade winds can rain down. The coral atolls, on the other hand, are rather flat. That’s why they’re drier. Drought phases are quite possible here in the dry season.
The rainy season lasts from November to April. The sky is often cloudy, thunderstorm showers often fall in the afternoons and it becomes oppressively hot. Every two to three years between January and March, the Solomon Islands are hit by tropical cyclones.
The months from May to October bring significantly less rain ; but it is seldom completely free of precipitation even in the dry season. The southeast trade wind, however, ensures that the humidity drops in the dry season with a pleasant breeze from the sea.
Best travel time for the Solomon Islands
As in other tropical states, the Solomon Islands also have the ideal travel time to be in the dry season. This prevails in the Solomon Islands between May and October. The sun shines very often during these months. The temperatures are pleasantly warm, there is little rain and the humidity is bearable for visitors.
In the rainy season from November to April, on the other hand, it is not only the heavy rains and the great humidity that make the vacationer to create; there is also the risk of typhoons and many roads, ship passages or flights are repeatedly interrupted or canceled.
